It is the first scientific/graphing calculator I have purchased. Several of the reviews gave warnings about the learning curve. I went in expecting it to be tough. But that does not mean it was a bad purchase. I think that if you are a novice then this might be the ideal product for you.

You won't have to relearn how you calculate. It seems like this is the direction that hi-end calculators are heading so why not jump in head first?
Think of it like upgrading to a fancy new cell phone. You know you like that. This unit has a free downloadable version for your computer so you can use it in a larger size and explore features in a familiar environment. Be sure to make use of TI's website and watch the videos that user's have uploaded on youtube. I also bought the TI NSPIRE for Dummies book and it is a huge plus. There is a moderate learning curve. The touchpad is great but it takes a little practice.
The CAS has solved problems and formatted answers better than my HP49g and I highly recommend it. I think TI should make it easier to graph vertical lines. I was disappointed when it could not graph abs(x)-3 then graph x.
This is a great calculator. The features are fantastic and I love being able to enter formulas exactly as they appear written down. This greatly minimizes errors during formula entry.The battery life has been a concern from some, but I have not really seen an issue. I used it ALOT in one week and only used half the battery.
They say that it should last 2 hrs /day for 14 days and I'm using it more than that. I did have one hiccup when charging it for the first time that I'm not sure what happened. It only charged to 75% and never went further even after charging all night.
After resetting it, it correctly shows a fully charged battery, but I'm not sure why the hiccup.One issue I have with this calculator is that it definitely is not for beginners. It takes a certain amount of know how to find what you're looking for. There is a Help feature, but unfortunately, there isn't any kind of per function help (eg. What exactly is the dbd function and what is the function expecting as input.) Instead, you have to go lookup the function on a computer. Also, there is NO PRINTED GUIDEBOOK. I don't get why this is a trend, but I'm getting tired of manufacturers not printing out a guidebook for a $140 calculator.

This thing has a ton of features and most I don't know about because I despise having to read through a PDF on a computer.Plus, a word of warning not particularly of this calculator, but of Walmart. Walmart shipped this in a shipping bag. Not that big of a deal if it shows up undamaged, but there is almost NO protection to the calculator during shipping. In addition, they had to send me 2 because the first one never arrived. When UPS showed up at my door, the bag was empty which meant that I had to file a claim with UPS and notify Walmart so I could get another shipped out.
Thankfully their warehouse is close so I didn't have to wait long to receive the replacement calculator.
Here is a proven way for those of you that struggle to connect your Ti89 calculator to a MAC computer.This is what you need to do to get connected:. Uninstall TI Connect v4.0 if installed. Download and Install TI Connect version 4.1:. Beware: this link immediately downloads the.dmg file to your MAC, there is no webpage loading. Note: that download link may change if TI places the link on a webpage instead. Make sure that you do not have a USB cable connected to your computer WHILE installing TI Connect.
If Ti89 is not recognized by your MAC: restart the MAC, try the other USB ports, have patience as drivers may take time to load.
