General Hammond summons Colonel Jack O'Neill out of retirement to embark on a secret rescue mission. O'Neill confesses that he disobeyed orders to destroy the Stargate on Planet Abydos, and that scientist Daniel Jackson may still be alive. Arriving on Abydos with his team, O'Neill meets up once again with the scientist, who has discovered a giant elaborate cartouche in hieroglyphics. All signs point to the fact that this is a map of many Stargates that exist throughout the galaxy - a development that makes the dream of the SG-1 team to travel throughout the universe in time a reality. TriviaThe characters mention that the Stargate has thirty-nine symbols, seven glyphs, or chevrons, being necessary for any travel across the galaxy. Applying mathematical combinatorics, the number of unique permutations (and therefore gate addresses) without re-using any symbols to locate other planet or starship is 77,519,922,480. If symbols can be used more than once in an address, the number jumps to 137,231,006,679.
For comparison, there are an estimated four hundred billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy. In effect, the design of the Stargate network could reach less than half the star systems in the Milky Way, and far less than half the planets. In addition, using eight glyphs for an address (extragalactic voyage), a stargate can locate 2,480,637,519,360 places throughout the universe, increased to 5,352,009,260,481, if one or more glyphs can be re-used.

English was developed long after the stargates were used to populate these other planets and furthermore, English is an amalgamation and evolution of other early languages unique to Earth after the Gou'ald. Nevertheless, production logistics and writing logistics made it more practical for alien encounters to speak English as to eliminate the repetition of Daniel deciphering the language and then translating the language to the rest of the team for any episode dealing with an alien race which were the majority of the episodes. This also helped eliminate the need for the writers to invent a new language for every new alien civilization encountered. This practice carried over into Stargate: Atlantis as well.
Alternate VersionsHere are the main noticeable differences between the 42-minute version and the 63 minute version of 'Threads' (episode 8.18). These scenes are not included in the 42 minute version. firstly, there wasn't a 'Previously on Stargate SG1.' I think this show is great. A great strength is that it doesn't go into special effects a lot (except for the gate, of course, and the staff weapons/guns). Some compare it to Star Trek (which is unfair, seeing that they are very different) but where a lot of Star Trek plots fail this succeeds. There are a dozen ways this series can go.
It doesn't have a spaceship to fly around in, but rather beams right to an alien planet and gets down to business. Another plus is that it happens NOW, as opposed to a few centuries from now. Area 51 has been mentioned a few times, and the SG site being dubbed Area 52.

The actors deserve their share of congrats on the good performances shown, and the writers for coming up with inventive story lines. Some may be recycled or resemble other movies/shows of the past, but they put a special original twist on them that makes it even better.
